Unlike Medicare Advantage or Part D — which lock you into rigid annual enrollment seasons — a Medicare Supplement can be applied for or switched at almost any time of year. But "you can apply" and "you're guaranteed to get in" are two very different things. The windows are what decide whether you sail in with no health questions or have to pass a health review. Here's every one that matters.
1
The One That Matters Most: Medigap Open Enrollment
Your single best window is a one-time, six-month period called the Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is the golden ticket — and it's important not to confuse it with your Medicare sign-up window, because they're different clocks.
Your Medigap window opens the first month you are BOTH age 65 or older AND enrolled in Medicare Part B — and it stays open for six months. During it, you have full guaranteed-issue rights: any carrier must sell you any plan they offer, at their best health-based price, with no health questions and no denials.
- Any of the plans, any company. Pick the letter you want from any carrier. (The exception: Plan F is limited to those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.)
- It's one-and-done. This window does not repeat every year. Once your six months pass, it's gone.
SRIG take: If you're approaching 65 and leaning toward a Supplement, locking it in during these six months is one of the highest-value moves in all of Medicare. Health can change overnight — this window guarantees your coverage before it can. Not sure you qualify? Start with

Working Past 65? Your Window Waits for You
Here's a piece of good news for people still working. Because your Medigap window doesn't start until you're enrolled in Part B, delaying Part B while you're on solid employer coverage also delays — and preserves — your guaranteed Medigap window.
When you eventually leave that creditable employer coverage and enroll in Part B, your fresh six-month Medigap window opens then — with the same no-health-questions guarantee. You don't lose it just because you waited.
The key word is
creditable — your employer plan has to be genuine, qualifying coverage. Getting this transition right protects both your Medigap rights and keeps you clear of late penalties. See

Guaranteed-Issue Windows (Life Happens)
Even outside your six-month window, certain events open a temporary door to buy a Supplement with no health questions. These are your guaranteed-issue rights, and they usually come with a tight clock — often around 63 days from the triggering event. The common ones:
↩
Trial Right
You tried a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time and want to switch back within your first 12 months.
✕
Your Plan Leaves
Your Advantage or Medicare SELECT plan exits your area, or you move out of its service area.
🏢
Coverage Ends
You lose employer or retiree coverage that was paying alongside Medicare.
⚠
Carrier Problems
Your Medigap company goes bankrupt, breaks Medicare's rules, or misled you.
Don't sit on these. Guaranteed-issue windows are short and sometimes limit which plan letters you can choose. The moment one of these events happens, the clock is running — call us the same week, not the next month.

Anytime — With a Health Review
Outside of those protected windows, you're not stuck — you can still apply to buy or switch a Supplement any month of the year. The catch is that in most states, the carrier gets to run medical underwriting — a health review that can approve you, charge more, or decline you.
This "anytime" lane is actually a great tool for healthy people. If your health is good, you can shop for a lower rate whenever you want — even years into your plan — and switch to a better-priced carrier for the identical coverage. That's how smart clients keep their premium in check over time.
SRIG take: This is exactly why we do an annual rate check for our Medigap clients. Same Plan G, but carriers raise rates at different speeds — if yours has drifted high and your health is good, we can often move you to a cheaper one for the exact same benefits.

Some States Give You Extra Guaranteed Windows
This is where it pays to know your local rules. A number of states go beyond federal law and hand you extra chances to switch Supplements without any health questions. They generally fall into a few types:
- "Birthday rule" windows — several states give you a short window each year around your birthday to move to an equal or lesser plan with no underwriting.
- Year-round guaranteed issue — a few states let you change Supplements at any time of year without health questions.
- Anniversary or annual windows — some states tie a no-underwriting window to your policy's anniversary, or require carriers to hold an annual open period.
These state programs each have their own day counts, age limits, and fine print — and they change from year to year. Rather than hand you a list that could be outdated the moment a state tweaks it, we'll give you the current, correct answer for exactly where you live. Just ask.
SRIG take: Because we're licensed in all 50 states, we track these rules everywhere. If your state has a birthday-rule window and you're overpaying, that's a free, no-underwriting chance to fix it — and we'll make sure you don't miss it.

Can I switch Medicare Supplements at any time?
Yes, you can apply to switch any month of the year — there's no locked annual season like Advantage or Part D. But outside a guaranteed window, most states let the new carrier run medical underwriting, so approval isn't automatic. If you're healthy, switching to a lower-priced carrier for the same plan is a great money-saver.
How long is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period?
Six months. It begins the first month you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B, and it's a one-time window. Don't confuse it with your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period, which is the separate 7-month window for signing up for Parts A and B.
What happens if I miss my Medigap window?
You can still apply anytime, but in most states you'll go through medical underwriting and could be charged more or declined based on your health. Guaranteed-issue situations and certain state rules can still give you a no-underwriting path, so it's worth having us check.
Does delaying Part B for a job cost me my Medigap window?
No. As long as you have creditable employer coverage, your six-month Medigap window simply waits and opens when you enroll in Part B after leaving that coverage. You keep the guaranteed-issue protection.
What is the birthday rule?
It's a state-level protection (offered in several states) that gives you a short window each year around your birthday to switch to an equal or lesser Medigap plan without answering health questions. The exact rules vary by state and change over time, so confirm what applies where you live.
Medigap timing boils down to one idea: get into a guaranteed window if you can, and use the "anytime" lane strategically if you're healthy. Here's how to make sure your timing works for you:
