Medigap Made Simple

Original Medicare leaves gaps — the 20% with no ceiling, the deductibles, the hospital charges. A Medigap plan fills them. And here's the best part: of everything in Medicare, Supplements might be the simplest piece to understand. Let's prove it.

A Medicare Supplement — everyone calls it Medigap — is private insurance that does one job exceptionally well: it pays the gaps that Original Medicare leaves behind. Medicare pays its share first, then your Medigap plan picks up most or all of what's left. That's it. That's the whole idea.

People love these plans for four reasons, and once you see them, you'll understand why Medigap is the simplest coverage in all of Medicare.

1

Every Plan Is Standardized by Law

This is the one that changes everything. Medigap plans are labeled by letter — Plan G, Plan N, and so on — and the government requires every plan of the same letter to be identical.

A Plan G is a Plan G is a Plan G. Company A's Plan G covers the exact same things as Company B's Plan G. The only differences are the price and the company's service. That means you're comparing true apples to apples.
SRIG take: Read that again, because it's where the money is. Same coverage, different price — sometimes hundreds of dollars a year apart for the identical plan. Shopping every carrier is literally free money, and it's exactly what an independent advisor does for you.
2

No Networks, No Referrals

Because a Supplement sits on top of Original Medicare, you keep Medicare's "network" — and here's the thing, that's basically the entire country. Roughly 9 out of 10 providers accept Medicare, and if a doctor takes Medicare, they're required to take your Supplement too.

  • Any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare — no in-network list to check.
  • No referrals to see a specialist.
  • Travel or split time between states? Your plan works everywhere in the U.S. — no home-base network to worry about.
SRIG take: For folks who travel, have a place in two states, or just want the freedom to see any specialist without asking permission, this is the single biggest reason they choose Medigap over the alternative.
3

Guaranteed Renewable — It Can't Be Cancelled

Once you have a Medigap plan, the insurance company can never drop you — no matter how many claims you file or how sick you get. As long as you pay your premium, your coverage renews. Period. The only way to lose it is to stop paying.

So protect it: set your premium on automatic bank draft. The nightmare scenario is landing in the hospital, forgetting a payment, and losing a plan you might not be able to medically qualify for again. Automate it and that risk disappears.
4

Claims Pay Themselves

There's almost nothing for you to do. Your provider bills Medicare first (your primary coverage). Once Medicare approves and pays its share, the claim is automatically passed to your Medigap company, which pays its portion.

No paperwork, no fighting. The Medigap company doesn't get to decide whether to pay — if Medicare approved it, the Supplement pays its share. You often never see a bill at all.

The Plans People Actually Choose

There are several lettered plans, but in the real world most people land on one of these three. Here's the quick version:

PlanBest ForThe Trade-Off
GThe most popular. Covers nearly everything — you only pay the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), then essentially $0 after.Highest premium of the three, but the fewest surprises.
NLower premium than G, with small copays (up to $20 at the doctor, $50 at the ER). Great for healthy folks who want to save monthly.Small copays, and it doesn't cover rare "excess charges."
HD GHigh-Deductible Plan G. The lowest monthly premium — you pay costs yourself up to a deductible ($2,950 in 2026), then it acts like full Plan G.Big deductible before it kicks in. Best for the healthy who want a low premium.
Plan F is the old favorite that covered everything — but it's only available if you were Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020. For most people today, Plan G is the closest equivalent. Want the deep dive? See picking your best Medigap plan.

What Drives the Price

Since the coverage is fixed by law, price is where carriers compete. Your Medigap premium is based on:

  • Your ZIP code — rates vary by area.
  • Your age — most plans price by your age, and many rise a bit each year.
  • Gender and tobacco use — both factor in.
  • The carrier — the big one. Different companies charge very different prices for the identical lettered plan.
SRIG take: Don't just chase the lowest rate today — chase rate stability. Some carriers lure you in cheap, then raise rates hard once you're locked in and would have to pass a health exam to leave. We steer clients toward companies with a long track record of steady pricing. That's the difference between a good rate and a good decision.

The Honest Trade-Offs

We believe in showing both sides. Medigap isn't automatically right for everyone — here's the fine print:

  • Higher monthly premium than a Medicare Advantage plan. You pay more up front for fewer surprises later.
  • You buy Part D separately — drug coverage isn't included, so you add a standalone Part D plan.
  • No built-in extras like dental, vision, or hearing that many Advantage plans bundle in.
None of these are dealbreakers — they're just the trade you make for freedom and predictability. Whether that trade is worth it for you is exactly the Medigap vs. Advantage decision we walk you through.

What If You Move?

Moving to another state doesn't automatically change your rate — it depends entirely on your carrier. Some use regional or blended pricing, so a move from a pricey state to a cheaper one might barely change your premium. Others are strictly ZIP-based. And switching to a lower-priced plan in your new state usually means a new application with health questions.

Common Questions

Is a Medicare Supplement the same as Medicare Advantage?
No — they're opposites in how they work. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare and pays the gaps, with any-doctor freedom. Medicare Advantage replaces how you get Parts A and B through a private plan with networks and copays. You choose one or the other, not both.
Why do the same Medigap plans cost different prices?
Because coverage is standardized by law but pricing isn't. Every carrier's Plan G is identical in benefits, so they compete purely on price and rate stability. That's why comparing carriers can save you real money for the exact same coverage.
Why would my Medigap rate go up?
Two reasons. Planned increases come from age-based pricing — you're a year older each year. Unplanned increases happen when a carrier's claims run higher than expected, or with inflation. Choosing a carrier with a history of stable rates helps protect you.
Do I still need a drug plan with a Supplement?
Yes. Medigap doesn't include prescription coverage, so you'll pair it with a standalone Part D plan to cover your medications and avoid the Part D late penalty.
Can I be turned down for a Medigap plan?
It depends on timing. During your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment window (when your Part B starts), you can't be denied for health reasons. Outside that window, most states allow medical underwriting — which is exactly why the timing matters so much.
