Here's the thing that trips people up: Medicare Advantage isn't "sign up whenever you feel like it." Enrollment happens during set windows — and if you miss yours, you may be locked into your current coverage until the next one comes around. The good news? There are only a handful, and once you see them on a calendar, it's simple. Let's map them out.
The Year at a Glance
Two windows come around every single year like clockwork. Here's how they sit on the calendar:
Your Enrollment Windows, One by One
Initial Coverage Election Period
Your very first window. It lines up with your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare — the seven months that span the three months before your 65th-birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after. This is when you can join your first Advantage plan.
Who: people new to MedicareAnnual Election Period
The big one. Every fall, anyone on Medicare can make changes for the coming year. New plans are released October 1, but you can't enroll until October 15. Any change you make takes effect January 1. During AEP you can:
- Join an Advantage plan for the first time
- Switch from one Advantage plan to another
- Drop Advantage and return to Original Medicare
- Add or change a Part D drug plan
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
A second-chance window — but only if you're already on an Advantage plan on January 1. It lets you make one change: switch to a different Advantage plan, or drop it and go back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan). Your change starts the first of the following month.
- Switch to a different Advantage plan
- Leave Advantage and return to Original Medicare + Part D
Special Enrollment Periods
Life doesn't always wait for a window. Certain events open a Special Enrollment Period so you can change plans outside the normal dates. Common triggers include:
- Moving out of your plan's service area
- Losing other coverage (like an employer plan)
- Qualifying for Extra Help or Medicaid
- Your plan leaving Medicare or changing its contract
Five-Star Special Enrollment Period
A lesser-known bonus. If a 5-star rated Advantage or Part D plan is available in your area, you get one chance during the year to switch into it — a nice perk most people never hear about.
Who: anyone with a 5-star plan available locallyIf You Have Medicaid or Extra Help
People who qualify for Medicaid or the Extra Help program get additional opportunities to change plans during the year — beyond the standard windows above. These rules were recently updated, so the exact timing depends on your situation.
